Amazon to axe 18,000 jobs amid economic uncertainty

The largest round of layoffs in Amazon’s history will result in 18,000 job losses, the company has stated.

The e-commerce giant’s brick-and-mortar locations, including Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go, will be particularly hit by the changes, chief executive Andy Jassy acknowledged in a memo to employees.

As the workforce shrinks, he cautioned, those in human resources may also be at risk.

The company’s e-commerce and human resources departments will be significantly impacted by the layoff choices, he added.

The reductions will affect 6% of the company’s 300,000+ corporate employees.

It signifies a quick reversal for a business that recently quadrupled its base salary threshold in an effort to attract personnel more aggressively.

Amazon employs more than 1.5 million people worldwide, despite the fact that rising inflation has forced both consumers and businesses to reduce spending.

It’s unclear how many people will be laid off in the UK.

Annual planning “has been more difficult given the uncertain economy,” Mr. Jassy continued in the note, adding the business “hired rapidly over the last several years.”
